A 5-inch quad is the standard hobby drone: tough, repairable and fast. You will assemble the frame, solder motors and the battery lead, bind an ExpressLRS receiver and tune it in Betaflight. Practice in a simulator first — it saves a lot of broken props.

⚠ SAFETY
In the U.S., recreational pilots must pass the free FAA TRUST test, register drones over 250 g (0.55 lb), comply with Remote ID and keep the aircraft within visual line of sight (FPV pilots need a visual observer). Rules change — check faa.gov before you fly. LiPo batteries can catch fire if punctured, overcharged or shorted. Charge in a LiPo bag, never unattended, and always remove propellers while working on the bench.

Mission steps

  1. Assemble the frame

Bolt the arms and bottom plate together and mount the motors with the correct screw length — too long touches the windings.

  2. Install the stack

Mount the 4-in-1 ESC and flight controller on soft-mount grommets. Note the arrow on the FC: it must point forward.

  3. Solder motors and power

Solder each motor's three wires to the ESC pads and the XT60 lead to the battery pads. Add the low-ESR capacitor across the battery pads.

  4. First power-up with a smoke stopper

Plug the battery through a smoke stopper. If it trips, unplug and look for a short before going further.

  5. Wire and bind the receiver

Connect the ELRS receiver to a free UART (TX→RX, RX→TX, 5V, GND), then bind it to your radio with the same binding phrase.

  6. Configure Betaflight

In Betaflight Configurator: set the receiver to Serial/CRSF, check motor order and direction (props off!), set arming and flight-mode switches, calibrate the accelerometer.

  7. Maiden flight

Props on, open field, low throttle. Hover, land, check motor temperatures, then fly a little more each pack.

Questions

Should I buy a pre-built drone instead?

Building teaches you to repair crashes, which happen to everyone. If you want to fly first, a ready-to-fly whoop plus a simulator is a great warm-up.

Betaflight or ArduPilot?

Betaflight is for acrobatic manual flying. ArduPilot (or INAV) adds GPS, return-to-home and autonomous missions.
