BCM vs physical numbers?

Physical numbers count pins 1–40 on the header. BCM (GPIO) numbers are what code libraries like gpiozero use.

Can GPIO pins handle 5 V?

No. GPIO pins are 3.3 V only. Use a level shifter or voltage divider for 5 V signals.
