Your Own Private Cloud with Nextcloud
Sync files, back up phone photos and share folders from a Pi you control — a self-hosted alternative to cloud drives.
Nextcloud gives you file sync, photo backup, calendars and contacts on your own hardware. The official All-in-One Docker image handles the database, updates and backups for you.
A server holding your files is a target. Keep it updated, use strong passwords with two-factor authentication and avoid exposing it directly to the internet.

Mission steps
Prepare storage
Boot from an NVMe SSD and attach a large USB drive for data. Complete the Docker guide first.
Start Nextcloud AIO
Run the master container command from the Nextcloud AIO documentation (it supports ARM64).
Plan remote access
AIO needs a domain for HTTPS. For a private setup, use Tailscale and its HTTPS certificates instead of opening ports.
Install the apps
Use the Nextcloud desktop client and mobile app; turn on automatic photo upload.
Back up
Enable AIO's built-in BorgBackup to a second drive.
Questions
Is a Pi fast enough?
A Pi 5 with an SSD handles a family's files and photos well. Heavy video previews and office editing benefit from more RAM.
