Meshtastic is open-source firmware for ESP32 and nRF52 LoRa boards. Each radio pairs to a phone over Bluetooth and relays messages for others, building a mesh — great for hiking, boating, hurricanes and events.

⚠ SAFETY
Meshtastic is not a certified emergency system. Carry proper emergency communication (a satellite messenger or marine VHF radio) for real emergencies.

Mission steps

  1. Buy supported boards

Pick boards listed as supported on meshtastic.org for your region's band (915 MHz in the U.S.). Always attach the antenna before powering on.

  2. Flash the firmware

Use the official web flasher in Chrome or Edge over USB.

  3. Pair the phone

Install the Meshtastic app, pair over Bluetooth and set your region (US). The radio will not transmit until the region is set.

  4. Create a private channel

Set a channel name and key and share it by QR code with your group.

  5. Extend the range

Place a solar-powered node on a high point to relay messages across a whole neighborhood.

Questions

Do I need a ham license?

No for normal use on license-free ISM bands. A licensed mode exists for ham operators who want higher power, but it disables encryption.
